Feeding and Weaning

Continuing with the Catherine theme this week, here's a quick update on what we're doing with food lately.

She's been down to two nursing sessions {breakfast and supper} for awhile, and I think we've finally stopped the morning one. We fill up that tummy with a big serving of fruit and steel cut oats, and our mornings are so fast-paced that it worked well to drop that one.

We've also been trying to increase portion sizes and incorporate "good" fats like olive oil and avocado to add some weight to our teensy one. She mostly has veggies for lunch as she has turned up her nose at pasta, rice, and hummus so far. {Beans are hit or miss.} More fruit for a snack in the afternoon, and supper is a mix between what we're eating and more veggies.

I really wanted to avoid dairy as much as possible with her, but she just did not go for almond milk. So, for now, she's also getting a couple of bottles of whole milk during the day. We're going to get through this first weaning before we move to weaning off the bottle! We'll try reintroducing almond milk later, but at least this is another way to add some fat to her diet.

I'm eager to drop that last nursing session, but it is one of the first things she wants to do when I get home in the evenings. She also still nurses overnight if she wakes up because it is the quickest way to get her back to sleep, and I'm exhausted. :) I actually think she'll wake up less if she's not having a snack, so that's another part of the motivation.

So...any advice on weaning from that last nursing session? Or of meal plans for a one-year-old in general? {That information has been surprisingly hard to find--even from our doctor!}

    Well, I'm old as Mrs. Methuselah, but when we were sick and not eating, my Mom would make us egg nog. Just milk, an egg, a smidge of vanilla, and she sweetened with sugar. But you could use agave, and even use canned milk for some extra calories. That could be given from either a bottle or a sippy cup. (Can't remember if they're allowed to have eggs at 1.) That might appeal to Miz. C. as much as nursing, with the plus that anybody could snuggle her while she had it. I also don't know whether Catherine is allowed to have mushrooms, mixed into her veggies. But mushrooms are 80% protein, so that's extra nutrition. I looked this up on the internet after your last post, and many moms were suggesting Pediasure. I don't know what's in that product. So I can't say for sure that's an avenue you would want to go down.

    1. Mushrooms are a great idea! Hadn't thought of those since her dad and I don't like them! :P

  2. My kids always had plain full-fat yogurt (I think I'd found a 6% one) mixed with bananas for breakfast and half an avocado and cottage cheese for lunch along with some bread and fruit. But that's a lot of dairy so I'm guessing that may not work for you.

    And in terms of nursing Sam didn't wean completely until 16 months and Rachel was 13 months. I just stopped nursing Rachel eventually because she was biting after every time and that HAD TO stop!

    1. I've been thinking of incorporating some Greek yogurt into her afternoon snack. And, yes, she bites, and I also want her to be completely weaned before Baby 2!

  3. Both of mine (Kate on formula, Henry nursing full time) handled whole milk well and love it, so we probably did do a lot of dairy. I was fortunate that mine ate well and a lot. At that age, we had 3 meals a day and lots of snacking in between. They were ready to snack by 9:30am and 3pm. I was able to do the "cry it out" at night since I was not going to work the next day, although I never let them cry more than 15 minutes. I don't really have much good advice for low weight...my 28lb 16 month old is torture to carry around so I am a tiny by envious :)

    1. We've just been doing an afternoon snack, but I've been thinking of bringing back the morning one as well, especially since she needs the extra weight. We let her fuss for about five minutes, but we might have to try extending it if the twice-a-night awakenings keep up!
      And, my goodness, Henry's a big fellow, huh? :)
