One of my life goals is to make it to every SEC football stadium. I had made it to half of them until we added two more schools to the conference, and now my numbers are lagging. :)
Perhaps a more worthy goal would be to visit all the presidential libraries. Now that George W. Bush's collection will be housed at SMU, I have no excuse, right? {And I don't believe that Johnson's, Clinton's, and Bush I's are too far away either...presidential road trip, perhaps?}
Another interesting Texas library...this one is all digital. I would venture that every library these days is having to decide how to navigate the print-digital tension, but I would also say that I don't think many would be ready at this point to go all digital. There are funding concerns, patron expectations, and the question of availability of books in digital format {this is especially true for some essential theological materials like commentaries}. It's going to happen on a different timeline for different libraries, but it's interesting to get glimpses like this one of what the library world might look like in another generation or two.
Finally, I loved this post from E Tells Tales about her book club. Both my work and church book clubs have fizzled, and I miss getting together with friends to talk about what we're reading! Online book clubs are a fun replacement, particularly during this busy season of life, but I've been marinating on some possibilities for a live-in-person group.
Of course, that would mean actually finding time to read. I've been working on the same book for so long it's shameful! What are you reading these days?

My sister's friend, Robin Yocum, published his second novel called THE ESSAY. (Sorry, I don't know how to do the underline on these posts.) It's phenomenal. Every person I've loaned it to says the same thing. "I couldn't put it down." I've also Just finished KILLING LINCOLN, KILLING KENNEDY, and MRS.KENNEDY AND ME.
ReplyDeleteBut lately I've really had a bee in my bonnet because every single bookstore within a 15 mile radius of me has closed. Too much competition from the internet. Makes me all fractious just thinking about it.
Think I'll go find something new to read. That always makes me feel better.
Happy days and wishing you a good book,
Leah
P.S. Robin Yocum's first book, FAVORITE SONS, a mystery, is also VERY good.
Yikes! I love the availability online, of course, but it's hard to replace browsing around a bookstore. Do you have a comparable library?
DeleteI'm currently trying to get through two book club books. My IRL book club is reading "Half Blood Blues" by Esi Edugyan. My online book club is reading "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson. And then I'm also trying to read other books which have been suggested to me by friends. I always have about three or four books on the go and can't imagine life where real life books (as opposed to digital copies) don't exist in libraries. Sadness :(
ReplyDeleteI've heard good things about Three Cups of Tea, so I'll be interested to see what you think. And I'm still very attached to print as well!
DeleteYou could go to College Station and visit both an SEC stadium and #41 President George H. W. Bush's presidential library.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I've never been in a book club but think it would be super fun. If you get one together, and it meets after kiddo bedtime, I might be interested!
Love that idea! I've been debating going to the Bama game there this fall. (Don't know if I'll be ready to leave the little bitty one that soon.)
DeleteI'll definitely let you know if a book club materializes. I really do miss it!
Well, I DO love my several local libraries...but they have a different atmosphere and smell about them than a store full of new books. Tiffany, you will probably, if you haven't already come to this conclusion, think I'm nuts. But if somebody manufactured a perfume that was called Bookstore, and smelled like new books, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
ReplyDeleteHappy bookish days!
Leah
